Black spots on hydrangea are most likely fungal leaf spots. The most common type is Cercospora leaf spot, which affects most hydrangea species, especially large leaves (Hydrangea macrophylla), smooth (H. arborescens), and oak leaves (H. quercifolia).
Symptoms may vary slightly depending on the hydrangea, but usually the disease appears as small round purple spots on old leaves at the base of the plant. These spots will remain round as they expand, but they may become more angular if they encounter leaf veins. These spots may also turn tan or gray in the center, surrounded by a purple-brown halo.Severely spotted leaves may turn yellow-green and may fall off.
If you know your hydrangea has a history of leaf spot, you can use a preventative fungicide before the first leaf spot appears to help reduce the incidence of the disease.Repeat applications may be required.
However, once the spots appear on the leaves, they cannot be cured or removed.Fortunately, the disease rarely kills plants, and older specimens are usually tolerant of the disease. If it is too late to apply a fungicide, several steps can be taken to reduce the spread of the disease.Clean up and discard any shed infected leaves. This reduces the source of inoculum that could generate new infections.Water the plants in the morning to give the leaves time to dry out throughout the day, and avoid getting water on the leaves.Wet and humid conditions are often conducive to the development of fungal diseases.
